Owner | Artist | Mentor
Asaph Maurer was born in Saskatoon and has led a nomadic existence, living in the USA, Mexico, India, and across Canada. Starting his professional career in 2017, at the age of 35, Maurer has a unique lens through which he sees the world. Asaph was born and raised in a strict religious cult, called the Children of God, and spent his formative years sheltered from outside influences, traveling the world and living in communes. After escaping with his family and 5 children, at the age of 28, his limited social and global frames of reference caused him to be a keen observer of the human condition.
After years of drug and alcohol misuse and dealing with intense depression and anxiety, Asaph is now an advocate of harm reduction and of pursuing directions in life that nurture good physical and mental health. All of this has impacted and benefited his art: it reveals powerful emotional content and presents striking observations about the human condition. He has developed and mastered a unique representational style which involves thick layers of paint applied with palette knives and piping. Largely bypassing the use of brushes, Maurer has a signature technique that flaunts aggressive lines and strokes to create stunning visual images, combining aspects of representational painting with an impressionistic style.
Asaph is active in his community and participates in multiple charity and non-profit efforts have received extensive media recognition locally and was the recipient of the BizX 2019 “Artist of the Year” award in his city. He completed his inaugural solo show in 2018, and currently runs “The Art Incubator” - a co-operative art studio at The Windsor Business Accelerator. In 2020 he opened his first Art Gallery - “The Asaph Maurer Gallery of Fine Art” in Windsor. Maurer’s work has been exhibited in India, Toronto, the USA, and most recently in Windsor, Ontario. His work is represented by galleries locally and in the United States and is found in private collections and public displays around the world.
